"...Captain Henry Southby, 39th Battalion from Bendigo, Victoria. He was a 41 year old career soldier who had served in the South African war as Regimental Sergeant Major in the 4th Battalion of the Australian Commonwealth Horse and was awarded the Queen's Medal with two clasps. He was appointed a Lieutenant in the AIF on 23 February 1916 and embarked for overseas with B Company from Melbourne on 27 May 1916 aboard HMAT Ascanius. After being wounded in action in Belgium on 7 June 1917, he was evacuated to England for medical treatment. Following his recovery, he rejoined his battalion in Belgium on 5 August 1917. Capt Southby was killed in action at Passchendaele, Belgium on 12 October 1917 and is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial in Ypres, Belgium with others who have no known grave." - SOURCE (www.awm.gov.au)
