Lionel was the son of Elizabeth Martha Parminter, Wooloowin, Brisbane, Queensland, and the late George Henry Parminter, his father having died in 1914. The father was pay master and accountant at Victoria barracks for many years.
Lionel Parminter, prior to his departure from Brisbane in April, 1916, was on the staff as a clerk, at Messrs. D. and W. Murray Limited, which was a large drapery and woollen store. He was said to be well known in athletic and sporting circles, and was a capable organiser. He was in action at Pozieres, and was severely wounded in the back during August 1916. His mother noted on his roll of honour form that he lost three ribs and bore a piece of shrapnel lodged nearby his spine up until his death. Subsequent to his recovery, he spent some months in England, and visited many places. At Hurdcott (England) in August 1917, he assisted in arranging the programme of the Australian military sports. Ho was wounded a second time on 12 October 1917, and evacuated to England. His mother stated he was wounded in the right leg, and it was nearly amputated. (His brother Ambrose was on furlough, and they met in London in January 1918). They attended the intercessory services at Westminster Cathedral.
Lionel rejoined his unit in February 1918 and was killed in action at Dernancourt when the 49th Battalion was making a counter attack on the afternoon of 5 April 1918. His mother noted on his roll of honour of form that he had died “through having his left leg shot off.”
His grave was found in 1920 and his remains were interred in the Senlis Communal Cemetery Extension.
His brother, 6576 Pte. Joseph Parminter M.M. 9th Battalion AIF was wounded at Bullecourt and awarded a Military Medal in 1918. Another brother was 949 Pte. John Ambrose Parminter 41st Battalion AIF. Both brothers returned to Australia in 1919.
