Clarence and his unit embarked from Adelaide on board RMS Mongolia on 9 March 1916. He went to France with the 48th Battalion on 19 April. Four months later on 6 August Clarence suffered a shot to the head during action, but after treatment was able to rejoin his unit on 11 September. On 27 December he was hospitalised with a cold and diarrhoea for three weeks, rejoining his battalion on 23 January 1917. Clarence served out the war in France and returned to Australia on the China from England on
1 May 1919, where he was discharged on 21 July.
