Thomas was the son of Joseph and Jessie May Hatcher, of Branxton, New South Wales. His older brother, 456 Pte. Alexander Roy Hatcher 35th Battalion AIF died of wounds nine months later in France on 23 October 1917, aged 22.
Another brother, Mervyn Clarence Hatcher enlisted with the 35th Battalion AIF on the 30 November 1915 with his brother Alexander and was an original member of the Battalion. Mervyn was discharged ‘Medically Unfit’ during April 1916 by the Medical Board of the 9th Infantry Brigade.
Thomas went with the 34th Battalion to France during November 1916. He was killed in action two months later, only 19 years of age.
