Biography contributed by Robert Johnson

Enlisted underage at 17 years 8 months 22 days - see page 1 question 4 of NAA service record for altered age from 18 to 17 and insertion of DOB as 29/9/1896.  Actual DOB is 29/12/1896.  Fred's enlistment date is 21/9/1914 so his fudged birth date still makes him underage by eight days.

He enlisted as Castilla but his brother Jack enlisted as De Castilla.  There is an entry dated 8/1/1919 on page 27 of his service record that has his name as De Castilla and his cemetery record shows his name as De Castilla along with those of his six siblings.
