Alan and his brother Erroll both fought during World War One. Alan went to France with the 10th Battalion on 23 August. On 1 October he was hospitalised with suspected influenza that ended up being paratyphoid, calling for treatment in England. When back in France Alan severely sprained his left knee while practising bayonet fighting on 17 November 1917. Captain Guilfoyle stated that Alan was not to blame for the injury, which adversely affected his mobility for the duration of his service. From 25 November until 20 April 1918 he was in Sutton Veny Hospital, England being treated for cystitis. Alan was sent back to Australia on D9 Gaika on 12 May and discharged as medically unfit on 9 September.
