Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

Stanley Duncan Paterson was born at Parattah, Tasmania, in December 1897. He was employed as a clerk in Hobart when he enlisted in the AIF on 12 October 1914, claiming to be 'nearly 18'. He was actually 16 years and 11 months on enlistment. His mother gave written permission for him to enlist in the 'clerical branch' of the Expeditionary Force.

After initial training Paterson was assigned as a sapper, to the 3rd Field Company Engineers. They landed at Gallipoli in April 1915 and Paterson was killed at Quinns Post on 19 May 1915 during the big Turkish attack on the Australian positions.

His mother later filled in a roll of honour circular in which she stated that he had been 17 years and 6 months old when he died.

Paterson's brother, Colin Campbell Paterson, was also killed in the war, on 16 April 1917, while serving with 10 Field Artillery Brigade in France, during the Second Battle of Bullecourt.

They were the sons of Colin and Mary Paterson of Glenorchy, Hobart, Tasmania.
