Biography contributed by John Oakes

Arthur John PRIEST was born on 1st August 1882. In his Roll of Honour circular at the Australian War Memorial his mother states he was born in London and he came to Australia when he was ‘quite young’. On 11th May 1914 he joined the NSW Government Railways and Tramways as a machinist (temporary) in the Locomotive Branch based at Eveleigh. Before then, according to his AIF Attestation Paper, he had spent five years as an apprentice at the Fulham Engineering Co. On 24th September 1915 the NSWGR&T gave him leave to join the Expeditionary Forces.

He joined the AIF on 24th September 1915 and was assigned to the 12th Reinforcements to the 1st Field Company, Australian Engineers ranked as a Driver (Service Number 2423). He nominated his mother, Mrs Isabella Priest, as his next of kin. When he enlisted his address was the same as his mother’s, at Rozelle in Sydney (on his Attestation Paper he also said he had been born at nearby Balmain).

He went to Egypt where, on 6th February 1916, he was admitted to the 1st Australian General Hospital at Heliopolis with febricula.

On 19th February 1916 he was reported to be dangerously ill. On 22nd February 1916 he died due to the effects of enteric fever.

He is buried in the Cairo War Memorial Cemetery, Cairo, Egypt. His place of association is Rozelle, Sydney, NSW.
