Biography contributed by Adelaide Botanic High School

Ellis Hyndman Brannan was born in Manchester, England in March 1895. His exact birthdate is unknown. He lived the suburb of Maylands, at 24 Frederick St, South Australia. He lived here with his mother, Sarah Lydia Brennan, and father Francis Brennan. World War I began as he was working as a salesman. Before the war, Brannan served for 10 months in Citizen Forces 11th Battalion. Brannan signed up for the war at the age of 21 years and 2 months.

Brannan enlisted into the Army on May 19, 1916, in South Australia. Once he was enlisted, he then embarked in Adelaide 7-11-1916  on the H.M.A.T Afric to France.

Brannan got sick and was sent to hospital with catarrh which is a build-up of mucus in the airway or the body. Brannan was in hospital from the 20-6-1916 to the 23-6-1916 for 4 days. A year after, Brannan was sent to hospital with bronchitis, which is a condition that develops in the airway and in a person's lungs, which makes the lungs inflamed causing coughing and often with mucus production. Brannan was in hospital from the 4-2-1917 to the 10-2-1917. Brannan was taken on strength in France with the 10th Battalion on the 27-4-1917 and sent to the battlefields.

Brannan was involved in fighting in France at the Western Front where he lost his life.

After Ellis Hyndman Brannan had sadly passed away on the Western Front in France, the local newspaper addressed the fallen soldiers that had passed from South Australia. The dates they included in the newspaper were soldiers that passed away on May 6 to 10, 1916. Unfortunately, Ellis Hyndman Brannan was included in that newspaper; the local newspaper stated the day he had sadly passed May 7, the suburb he was from, which was Maylands South Australia and his last name, Brannan.
