Herbert William Davis was the son of Herbert and Ann Davis. His parents both passed away during 1912 so he gave his next of kin as his brother, Frank Davis of Leederville, Western Australia.
He enlisted at the same time he would have heard of the death of his brother, 3043 Pte. George Patrick Davis 51st Battalion AIF, who was killed in action at Mouquet Farm on 3 September 1916.
Just after Herbert arrived in England, another brother, 6038 Pte. Septimus Augustus Davis 11th Battalion AIF was killed in action near Bullecourt on 10 April 1917.
Herbert arrived on the Western Front in July 1917 and was severely wounded in Belgium a few months later. Evacuated to England he was soon after returned to Australia with a shrapnel wound which had fractured his ankle.
