HAROLD HERBERT DEAN was born on 17th December, 1891, at Young, New South Wales, the son of Mr. Thomas and Mrs. Elizabeth Dean. He was educated at the Public School, Young. He entered the service of the Bank on 20th October, 1909, at Bathurst, New South Wales; was transferred the following February to the Haymarket Branch, Sydney; in August, 1910, to Newtown; and June, 1911, to Ryde, where he was appointed ledger-keeper. In December, 1912, he was removed to Edgecliffe; thence to Uralla, New South Wales, in January, 1914, and to Singleton in the following August.

Harold Dean enlisted on 4th July, 1915, and left Australia with the 13th Brigade, Australian Field Artillery. He served in Egypt until June, 1916, and thenceforward in France until 22nd October, 1918. He was promoted to sergeant in April, 1916, and to lieutenant on 7th March, 1918, with the 113th Battery.
