From Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery
Served and suffered during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.
65 years ago today, on the 15th August 1956, Sergeant Cornelius Croese, 34th Battalion (Reg No-392), telegraph linesman from Carrington Street, Mayfield, New South Wales, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 62. CATHOLIC 2-49. 57.
Born at Mosquito Island, New South Wales on the 7th October 1893 to Adrian John and Mary Ann Croese of Mosquito Island, New South Wales and Carrington Street, Mayfield, N.S.W. and Crebert Street, Mayfield, N.S.W.; husband of Laura Marie Croese nee Dunning (married 1923, Wickham, N.S.W., died 1965), Con enlisted January 1916 at Newcastle, N.S.W.
Wounded in action - 7.6.1917 (GSW left arm, slight, Battle of Messines), 29.9.1918 (GSW left leg, mild), Con was invalided home February 1919, being discharged medically unfit on the 19th April 1919.
Mr. Croese’s name has been inscribed on the Newcastle Surf Club & Life-Saving Brigade Honor Roll (photo, unveiled on the 14th July 1918, 176 names originally inscribed, 194 names now inscribed, 24 Fallen), Newcastle Post and Telegraph Staff Roll of Honour, Mosquito Island Roll of Honour - http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article140973753 and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.
Con’s headstone inscription gives us no indication of his service with the 1st A.I.F., so I have placed poppies and a 1914-1918 WAR label to honour his sacrifice for God, King and Country.
Older brother Charles (Croix de Guerre, M.I.D., 19th Battalion and 2nd Divisional Signal Company, Reg No-2379, born 1889, died 1941 - CATHOLIC 1-22. 85.) also resting at the cemetery.
Younger brother Thomas (Depot Battalion, Reg No-N46526, born 1898, died 1974, discharged at parent's request, 16.8.1916. - CATHOLIC 2-53. 97.) also resting at the cemetery.
Lest We Forget.
