From Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery
Served during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery, not forgotten.
91 years ago today, on the Tuesday afternoon of the 4th November 1930, Private John Beri Magennis, 1st Australian Light Horse Regiment (Reg No-2351), labourer from Coolongolook, New South Wales or Gresford, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 46. ANGLICAN 2-150. 21.
Born at Gresford, New South Wales about 1884 to William John and Susan Magennis; husband of Hannah M Magennis nee Petersen (married 1921, Lismore, N.S.W., died?), John enlisted September 1915 at West Maitland, N.S.W.
Name mentioned as living at Coolongolook, New South Wales.
Admitted to hospital 17.6.1916 (rheumatism), 26.7.1916 (right inguinal hernia, mild).
John returned home September 1916, being discharged on the 4th November 1916.
Did not receive Victory Medal.
Mr. Magennis’s name has been inscribed on the Gresford School of Arts War Memorial (photos) and the Stroud Showground Great War Memorial (as MACINNIS).
I believe that the Commonwealth War Graves Plaque, curbing and marble chip was completed at the gravesite (originally an unmarked grave?) about October 2019, so contact with descendants would be greatly appreciated.
Lest We Forget.
