Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

6946 Private Ralph Norman Bradey 10th Battalion AIF was the son of William and Caroline Bradey, of Upper Mitcham, South Australia. His father passed away in 1920, so his mother received his medals and entitlements.

Ralph died of wounds in Belgium on the 2 October 1917. He was only just 20 years of age. He was buried but the grave was subsequently lost and he is remembered on the Menin Gate Memorial Belgium.

His older brother, 4132 Private Alfred James Bradey 48th Battalion AIF was killed in action at Mouquet Farm, in France, 31 August 1916, aged 23. He too has no known grave.

Ralph joined the 10th Battalion at the front about five months before he was mortally wounded by shell fire on 2 October 1917. He died of his wounds the same day in the 3rd Australian Field Ambulance, who reported that they buried Bradey on Bellewaarde Ridge.

Ralph Bradey’s death was reported in the Adelaide newspapers during late 1917. He had left the Mitcham State School and passed through the Unley High School from where he entered the Postal Department at Mitcham. He was afterwards transferred to the G.P.O., where he enlisted. He was reported as a useful member of the Boys' Club and a prominent player in basketball and football teams. He was said to be exceedingly popular and had many friends.
