Herbert left from Fremantle on board HMAT A16 Port Melbourne on 23 October 1916 and proceeded to France from Folkestone, England on 13 March 1917. He was wounded in action and taken as a prisoner of war on 7 April at Noreuil. Herbert was repatriated to England on 1 December 1918. In March 1919 he was admitted to hospital at Dartford. On 27 November he married Mary Reilly at Gorbals Parish Church, Glascow. Herbert returned to Australia on the Zealandic on 27 March 1920 and was discharged on 3 June.
