Prior to enlistment Gerald had seen service in the Boer War as a Trooper in the 2nd Scottish Horse.
He embarked 21 December 1914 for active service in Egypt, where he was wounded and proceeded to France.
Gerald was discharged in London 16 October 1915 and granted ac commission in the Royal Field Artillery in the British Imperial Army.
It appears that he remained in the UK after the war not returning to live in Australia.
