Biography

"...4191 Corporal Frederick James Hisgrove, 50th Battalion AIF from Cheltenham Park, South Australia who had previously served in the 2nd Battalion Australian Commonwealth Horse in the Boer War, leaving Port Adelaide on 20 February 1902 and arriving back in Adelaide on 31 July 1902. A 33 year old labourer prior to enlisting in the AIF on 2 August 1915, he embarked for overseas with the 13th Reinforcements of the 10th Battalion from Adelaide on 11 January 1916 aboard HMAT Borda. After arriving in Egypt, he transferred to the 50th Battalion and went with them to France in June 1916. He was killed in action near Pozieres, France on 16 August 1916 and is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France with others who have no known grave." - SOURCE (www.awm.gov.au)

"THE LATE CORPORAL F. J. HISGROVE.

Mrs. F. J. Hisgrove, of Carnarvon-street, Cheltenham, has been notified that her husband, Corporal F. J. Hisgrove, was killed in action in France on August 16. He was 34 years of age, and was in the building trade for many years. He was a member of the Builders' Laborers' Association, and was president of the Port Adelaide Trades and Labor Council when he enlisted in July, 1915. He was the only brother of Mr. J. Hisgrove, of Renmark. Corporal Hisgrove was highly esteemed by a large circle of friends. A widow and two young children are left. Mrs. Hisgrove's brother, Private T. J.
