A farmer prior to enlistment he embarked from Melbourne with the 3rd Reinforcements on board HMAT "Anchises" (A68) on 26 August 1915. He arrived at Gallipoli in October 1915 and remained until the evacuation in December. His aunt, Sister Ethel Rose Douglas was a staff nurse with the 1st Australian General Hospital and Pte White was reunited with her in Alexandria, Egypt in January 1916. Pte White arrived in France in March 1916 and was transferred to the 22nd Battalion. He was commended in August 1916 for "..good conduct in the recent fighting around Pozieres" where he had acted as a voluntary stretcher bearer. Private White was fatally wounded by machine gun fire during the attack on Beaurevoir near Peronne on 4 October 1918. He was acting as his unit's scout, locating enemy posts and drawing their fire so that the post could then be taken. He died of his wounds, aged 21 years. He was awarded the Military Medal on 3 July 1919, "for conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty…"
