Shirley Verdon William MARRIOTT was born c. 1892 in Brixton, Surrey, England to Sidney Randolph Robert Allies MARRIOTT and Elizabeth Louisa WHALE who married on 22nd January 1878 in St Marys Parish, Lambeth UK

Shirley (known as Bill ) married Hilda MILBURY in 1913 in Wandsworth, England - they arrived in Port Adelaide in 1913 on the ship Ballarat & had two children in South Australia - Ivan Milbury Delano MARRIOTT born 6th January 1915 and daughter Shirley Milbury MARRIOTT born 27th December, 1916

He enlisted in Adelaide on 27th January 1916 and embarked with the 27th Battalion, 12th reinforcements on 11th April, 1916 - his daughter was born while he was serving overseas

He was Killed in Action on 9th August, 1918 and buried in Heath Cemetery in France - his name is also commemorated at the Australian War Memorial - He received the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.

The photo of the cross shown in his profile comes from the Australian War Memorial collection & was made in February 1919 in Picardie, Somme, Amiens, Harbonnieres area in France and marked the isolated grave of 4744 Private Shirley Verdon William Marriott, 27th Battalion of Port Pirie, South Australia, Killed in Action on 8th August 1918
