BOER WAR
VETERAN DIES
One of the last two Horsham residents who fought in the Boer War, Mr. Gordon Lucas, died at the Wimmera base Hospital on Tiesday, aged 73. Deceased served in two wars, as a member of the 4th Victorian Contingent in the South African War and with the 5th Battalion in Gallipoli and France during World War 1. The only Horsham surviving member of the Boer War is Mr. Andy Wilson, who is an inmate of the Base Hospitail Mr. Ted Bolton, who served with them died about 12 months ago.
The late Mr. Lucas became well known to Horsham and district residents as seeretary, and librariain at the Mechanics Institute, continuing this work when it became the Public Library until a few years ago. Although he retired from this position he had continued to assist in relieving and was also in charge of the billiards room at the library. Born at Rushworth, he had lived in Victoria for about 60 years and had spent a number of years in Queensland and New South Wales.
The late Mr. Lucas, who was unmarried, is survived by a brother; Mr. William Lucas; and a sister, Miss Hebe Lucas. The funeral took place on Wednesday, the Rev Canon N. S. Fettell conducting the services, while the R.S.L. service was conducted by the President of the Horsham Sub-Branch (Mr Ivan Anderson). Mr. George Miller sounded the "Last Post." The coffin bearers were- Messrs: J. G. Askew; L. Smith;, N Seaset and A. McAuley, and the flag bearers were Messrs. F. Gillies; I. Anderson, A. Wilson and D Hill.
The funeral arrangements were carried out by L. Hutchesson and Son.
