Robert Ernest Shankland was born on September 13, 1889, in a town called Germanton in rural New South Wales, Australia. He grew up in Pinnaroo, South Australia. Later, he moved to Mannum, South Australia, where he worked as a ganger. Shankland married Ellen Jane Shankland on July 30, 1914.
He enlisted August 18, 1915, in Adelaide when he was 26 years old. On January 11, 1916, he left Australia on a ship called the HMAT A30 Borda to fight with the 10th Battalion.
On 29 February 1916, Shankland proceeded join the 50th Battalion from Zeitoun. A few days later, on 1 March, he was taken on strength with the 50th Battalion at Tel el Kebir in Egypt. Then, on the 16 of March, he was moved to the 4th Division Pioneer Battalion. On 4 June 1916, he left with the Transport Section to join the British Expeditionary Force from Alexandria, Egypt and arrived in Marseilles, France, on 11 June.
Later that year, while he was in France, he was promoted to Corporal on 15 August. Soon after on the 26th August he was appointed Lance Sergeant.
Shankland was wounded in Action 17th July 1917 by a bomb shell and was treated for wounds to his right chest and right hand. He was admitted to the No. 3 Stationary Hospital 23rd July and then transferred to 6th General hospital a few days later. Shankland was then moved to hospital in England for further treatment at the 3rd Australian Auxiliary Hospital in Dartfield in August 1917
On the 29th of September 1917, Shankland was reported in Weymouth by the Admin Department in London. Later, on the 31st of October 1917, he was sent from England to Australia because his wound to the chest caused a Haemothorax.
Shankland was sent back to Australia and arrived home on October 31, 1917. He was officially discharged January 14, 1918.
He passed away on April 26, 1968 at Jervois near Murray Bridge, at the age of 78. He is buried at the Murray Bridge Cemetery in South Australia.
