From How We Served

The final resting place for; - 2867 & V14077 Trooper Daniel John O’Sullivan of Albert Park, Victoria and Northam, Western Australia who had been employed as a laborer when he enlisted for War Service on the 15th of October 1916.

Daniel was allocated to reinforcements for the 44th Battalion 1st AIF and was embarked for England and further training on the 29th of December.

After a prolonged stay in England, Daniel was sent over to France where he arrived on the 11th of September 1917, and was officially taken on strength with his Battalion in the trenches on the 22nd of September.

Having only been in the line for less then a month, Daniel was wounded in action due to shrapnel to his right hand and was evacuated for hospitalization, being sent back to England on the 17th of October.
Due to his injuries Daniel was deemed no longer fit for active service and began his repatriation back to Australia as an invalid, departing England on the 12th of March 1918.

Following his return to Australia, Daniel received his official discharge from the 1st AIF for his re-entry into civilian life on the 12th of June 1918. With the outbreak of a second World War, Daniel again presented himself for service with the Australian Military Forces, when he enlisted on the 5th of May 1941, and was accepted for full time duty. Daniel was posted to Puckapunyal where he was taken on strength with the Australian Instructional Corps, and was serving with the Armoured Fighting Vehicle School when he was evacuated sick to the 115th Australian General Hospital (Heidelberg) on the 28th of October 1943.

Daniel was still a patient when he succumbed to illness on the 11th of November 1943 (Remembrance Day), at the age of 61.

Following his passing whilst again in the service of the Australian Military Forces, Trooper Daniel O’Sullivan, a wounded veteran of the ‘Great War’, was formally interred within Springvale War Cemetery, Victoria.
