John Dornan was born in Belfast on 31.7.1883. He married Mary Murray on the 20.4.1916 at Scots Church Fremantle. Mary was the fourth daughter of Mr and Mrs William Murray of University Avenue, Belfast. She lived in High St East Fremantle while John was away. His mother Minnie, lived at 30 Madrid St, Belfast. He enlisted at Perth on the 13.1.1916, the same day as his brother George and was allocated Service Number 1642. Initially a Private with the 44th Infantry Battalion, he was promoted to Lance Corporal on the 1.11.17, the same day George was promoted to the same rank. Aged 31 years 5 months, he was described as being 5 feet 5¾ inches tall, with a chest measurement of 33-35 inches, fresh blue eyes, fair hair. He was a dairy produce merchant and Presbyterian. John embarked at Fremantle on the 6.6.16 on A29 Suevic, John was wounded in action on the 28.3.1918 near Sailly-le-Sec in Belgium and transferred to England with a gunshot wound to his right elbow.
John returned to Australia on the 17.6.18 per D13 MT Matatua, disembarked at Fremantle on 5.8.1918 and was discharged on the 21.2.19. John and Mary lived in McCleery Street, Beaconsfield, then Attfield St, Fremantle. Mary died in Fremantle on 14.1.1944 and is buried in Fremantle Cemetery, Presbyterian Mon EE section, grave 0586. John then returned to Belfast where he resumed working as a grocer. He died at the family home at 30 Madrid St, Belfast, on the 24 March 1954, aged 70, and left his effect to his siblings James Dornan and Margaretta Sarah Rebecca Bailie. The FindaGrave website records that John was buried in Cargacreevy Presbyterian Graveyard, Lisburn, Country Antrim, Northern Ireland. A notice placed in the West Australian newspaper described him as a “loyal and esteemed Member of Session of Scots Church, Fremantle”.
