Add my storyBiography contributed by Stephanie Phillips
Walter was raised by his mother and did not know his father. He married Dorothea in 1913 and both were members of the Salvation Army. Walter played in the Salvation Army band in Wollongong and these talents were put to use within his service during World War !.
Walter was a bootmaker by trae and though they did not have a great deal of money as a family he was a well-known resident of Wollongong. He also was employed within Wollongong in the PUblic Works Department.
He was wounded twice during World War 1 and his wife Dorothea was informed of this by letter. On Walter's return from the War he found that his wife was pregnant, we assume that due to Walter's own upbringing that this is why he officially adopted his second son (my Grandfather).
