Arthur Maplestone served with the 3rd Divisional Signal Company from May 1916. He transferred to the Royal Flying Corps and after training his flying career lasted one month. He joined the 43rd Squadron in France on the 13 July 1917, flying 2-seater Sopwith Strutters. He crashed on takeoff for patrol on the 17 July 1917. He and his observer escaped unscathed. A week later his aircraft swung round and crashed on takeoff when Maplestone thought he was about to hit another machine. The two crewmen were again unhurt. On the 15 August 1917 Arthur was wounded in the leg on the patrol and was evacuated to England. He had to relinquish his commission on account of ill-health caused by wounds, and was granted the honorary rank of Lieutenant on 25 May 1918.
