Biography contributed by John Oakes
Fulke Greville Le Poer STORMONT (Service Number 2503) was born on 19th September 1887 at Delegate. He commenced working for the NSW Railways at Wellington as a casual fitters’ labourer in the locomotive depot from 25th August 1911. In November 1914 he relocated to Goulburn. He joined the Expeditionary Forces on 8th January 1916 enlisting at Goulburn. He gave his wife, Daisy Florence Stormont of Auburn Street Goulburn, as his next of kin. He claimed 12 months military experience with the 10th Australian Light Horse Regiment.
He was alllotted to the 5th Reinforcements to the 55th Australian Infantry Battalion. He embarked HMAT ‘Aeneas’ at Sydney on 30th September 1916 and reached Plymouth (England) on 19th November. At first he was placed in the 14th Training Battalion. He proceeded overseas to France on 21st December on board ‘Princess Victoria’ and joined the Battalion on 8th February 1917.
He was killed in action on France on 21st May 1917.
Pte. Charles Daw, (3499) reported:
‘I knew Fred Stormont quite well. He was tall and dark. I saw him killed by a shell in a trench at Bullecourt. I bandaged him but he died in a few moments after being hit. I took his body out of the trench and helped to bury him the next morning.’
At first he was buried in a makeshift grave in the field, but after the war in the rationalisation of cemeteries and isolated graves his remains were exhumed and re-interred in the Queant Road British Cemetery, Buissy, Nord Pas de Calais, France.
A pension of £2 per fortnight was awarded to Stormont’s widow, Daisy Florence from 9th August 1917. She wrote the military authorities:
‘Very many thanks for forwarding disc of my late husband. I really cannot thank you enough. I have been treated very well by the Military all through & although the blow is severe I have no regrets when the Officers have written to tell me that he played a most important part even though he lost his life.
You have my sincere wishes for a speedy Victory with our Allies.
Yours very gratefully,
Daisy F Stormont.’
