Biography contributed by Trinity College

Whittaker was on born on January 25, 1893 as a brother to 7 siblings and son of John Thomas Whittaker and Sarah Ann Headland. He and his family lived in a small South Australian town called Dowlingville where he was born and raised. He was also the nephew of Sergeant T. Shanks of Kadina, South Australia.

At the age of 21, Whittaker enlisted to serve in the Australian Imperial Force and in 1914, alongside his cousin R.R Shanks, he left his hometown to fight in France.

His unit was the 48th Australian Infantry Battalion and over the 3 years he was at war he achieved a final rank as Lance Corporal. Whittaker fought in Belgium as well as France over his war service and unfortunately died there on August 11 1917. His parents received a cable on Saturday, September 1 to inform them of his death. He was killed in action, presumably in the Battle of Ypres as its known that at the time of his death he was involved in the Third Ypres.

To this day Whittaker is commemorated on the Roll of Honour board in the Adelaide National War Memorial as seen the layout below. He was buried in Cabin Hill Cemetery, Messines, Flanders, Belgium where he is believed to still remain. Whittaker died at the age of 24, leaving money for the Y.M.C.A as a thank you for their help in the war. Lawrence Beauregard Whittaker's name will be projected onto the exterior of the Hall of Memory on Thursday September 28 2017 and Monday November 27 2017, in honour of his memory.
