The official news was received on Wednesday that Pte. Frederick William Storey, son of Mr. H. R. Storey, Court Bailiff, Cairns, had died on 23rd inst. from a gunshot wound.' from The Northern Herald 30 Nov 1917 (nla.gov.au)

Died on this date – 23rd November…… Frederick William Storey was born at Rockhampton, Queensland on 15th April, 1894.

He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 17th October, 1916 as a 22 year old single, Stockman from Einasleigh via Cairns, North Queensland.

Private Frederick William Storey, Service number 6384, embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on HMAT Demosthenes (A64) on 23rd December, 1916 with the 7th Infantry Brigade, 25th Infantry Battalion, 18th Reinforcements. He was admitted to Ship’s Hospital while at Sea on 11th February, 1917 & was discharged on 16th February, 1917. Private Storey disembarked at Plymouth, England on 3rd March, 1917.

Herbert Ramsay Storey, father of Private Frederick William Storey, died on 6th January, 1917 at Cairns, Queensland.

Reinforcements were only given basic training in Australia. Training was completed in training units in England. Some of these were located in the Salisbury Plain & surrounding areas in the county of Wiltshire.

On 3rd March, 1917 Private Storey was marched in from Australia to 7th Training Battalion at Rollestone, Wiltshire, England. He reported sick to Parkhouse Hospital, Wiltshire on 17th March, 1917 with Mumps & was discharged to 7th Training Battalion on 4th April, 1917.

He proceeded overseas to France on 14th June, 1917 from 7th Training Battalion & was marched in to 2nd A.D.B.D. (Australian Divisional Base Depot) at Havre, France on 15th June, 1917. Private Storey proceeded from 2nd A.D.B.D. on 2nd July, 1917 to join his Unit & was taken on strength of 25th Battalion in France on 3rd July, 1917 from Reinforcements.

On 30th September, 1917 Private Storey reported sick & was admitted to 5th Field Ambulance with PUO (Pyrexia (fever) of unknown origin). He was transferred to 7th Field Ambulance on the same day & was discharged to duty on 6th October, 1917. Private Storey rejoined his Unit on 9th October, 1917.

Private Frederick William Storey was wounded in action on 9th October, 1917. He was admitted to 3rd Field Ambulance on 9th October, 1917 with Shrapnel wound/s to Neck then transferred to 2nd Canadian Casualty Clearing Station. Private Storey was transferred to Ambulance Train on 12th October, 1917 & was admitted to 7th Canadian General Hospital on the same day. He was marked for transfer to England on 23rd October, 1917 & embarked for England on Hospital Ship Stad Antwerpen on 24th October, 1917.

He was admitted to 2/1st Southern General Hospital, Dudley Road, Birmingham, England on 24th October, 1917 with Paralysis of right Arm. The X-Ray report for 29th October, 1917 states “F.B. Clavicular region.” (FB = Foreign body)

Private Frederick William Storey died at 3.25 am on 23rd November, 1917 at 2/1st Southern General Hospital, Dudley Road, Birmingham, England from shrapnel wound/s to Neck (right side) & Anaemia.

He was buried in Lodge Hill Cemetery, Birmingham, West Midlands, England where 54 other WW1 Australian War Graves are located.  His name is now remembered on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission Screen Wall B10. 223 as those in this Plot do not have headstones.
