Alfred Jonas was born on March 11th, 1884 in Queenstown, South Australia. He was the second of the six sons of Daniel Jonas and Susan Esther Stone, who also had five daughters. Alfred’s brothers, John and Richard, also enlisted in World War 1.
Alfred enlisted on January 19th 1915 at Oakland in Adelaide and stated that his occupation was a carrier before his enlistment. When Alfred enlisted he was married to Beatrice Thompson in Rosewater in 1904 and they had four children, Cyril, William, Gwendoline and Lena, who died in 1911.
Having trained in Egypt Alfred landed on the Gallipoli peninsula on October 25th 1915. After the Gallipoli evacuation he returned to Egypt and was involved in the Defence of Egypt. Having fought in the First Battle of Gaza he was then engaged in the Second Battle and was wounded in this battle, suffering a gunshot wound to his right leg. He was hospitalised in Abbassia and Ismailia before he rejoined his unit in Moascar and was transferred to the 3rd Light Horse Regiment in August 1917 and when he moved to Palestine he was transferred to the 9th Light Horse Regiment. In September 1918 he contracted malaria.
Alfred remained in the Middle East until April 26th 1919 when he returned to Australia on the “Oxfordshire”. He lived in the Adelaide suburb of Semaphore and was employed as together with his son Cyril in a munitions factory. Cyril enlisted in the second world war. Alfred died on August 28th, 1950 and is buried in the Cheltenham cemetery.
