On the 6th April 1979, the funeral was held at Lithgow General Cemetery, N.S.W. for Lance Corporal John Earl Mitchell, referred to as Earl, 34th Battalion (Reg No-1182), wheeler from New Tunnel, Minmi, New South Wales and Lithgow, N.S.W. and Canterbury, N.S.W. (1954) and Capalaba, Queensland, ashes interred, date unknown at Col, F, age 81 years 4 months.

Mr. Mitchell had died on the 3th April 1979 at Queensland.

Born at Minmi, New South Wales on the 16th November 1897 to John, died 1.6.1954, Lithgow Hospital, N.S.W., age 87, buried at Lithgow General Cemetery, N.S.W., UC1, 2B from New Tunnel, Minmi, New South Wales and 91 Ferro Street, Lithgow, N.S.W., and Mary Elizabeth Mitchell, died 7.1.1934, Lithgow, N.S.W., age 61, mother of 11, sleeping at Lithgow General Cemetery, N.S.W., UC1, 2B from New Tunnel, Minmi, New South Wales and 91 Ferro Street, Lithgow, N.S.W.; husband of Eleanor Mitchell nee Norcott, married 1921, Newtown, N.S.W., died 24.1.1973, Victoria?, age 75, mother of 4, sleeping at Corryong Cemetery, Victoria.

Earl enlisted on the 31st January 1916, age 18 years 2 months, at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A20 Hororata on the 2nd May 1916.
Disembarked Plymouth, England 23.6.1916.

Proceeded O/Seas to France from Folkestone, England 21.11.1916.

Promoted to Lance Corporal 30.7.1917.

Transferred to England 13.5.1918.

Rejoined unit 26.8.1918.

Commenced return to Australia 11.5.1919.

Earl arrived home on the 28th June 1919, being discharged on the 12th August 1919.

Not officially commemorated.

I would like to see poppies placed at Earl’s plaque in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.

Younger brother Alexander Mitchell, born 20.7.1900, Minmi, N.S.W., onsetter's assistant from Redgate Street, Lithgow, N.S.W., enlisted 24.9.1918, Lithgow, N.S.W., age 18 years 2 months, Depot No-N94754, Private, discharged in consequence of expiration of period of enlistment.
