Edwin SMITH, (Service Number 6585) was born about May 1881 at Surrey in England.
He worked as a labourer for the NSW Railways at Eveleigh.
He joined the Expeditionary Forces on 3rd June 1916 at the Royal Agricultural Society Showgrounds at Moore Park in Sydney. He was married to Sarah and they lived in Marrickville.
He was allotted to the 21st Reinforcements to the 2nd Battalion. He embarked HMAT ‘Ceramic’ at Sydney on 7th October 1916 and reached Plymouth on 21st November. He spent the next few months with the 1st Training Battalion before proceeding overseas to France on 20th March 1917 and was taken on the strength of the 2nd Battalion on 24th March.
He was wounded in action of 7th May 1917 with shrapnel causing a compound fracture of his thigh. He was admitted to the 6th Field Ambulance but died of his wounds the same day. Smith was buried in the Vaulx Advanced Dressing Station Cemetery ½ mile SW of Vaulx Vraucourt and three miles NE of Bapaume.
