Son of Alexander and Elizabeth McDOWELL, 186 North Road, Brighton, Victoria. Native of Gordon, Victoria.

Norman McDowell died at the 3rd Canadian Casualty Clearing Station following gunshot wounds to the head suffered in action the same day.He was under 18 when he enlisted and needed his parent's consent, subsequently given with the proviso "That he is attached to the Army Medical Corps".His name was included on the South Preston State School's Honour Board.

His older brother 3194 Sergeant Athol Halliday McDowell 60th Battalion AIF was killed in action, 19 July 1916 at Fromelles. His remains were found and interred in the Fromelles (Pheasant Wood) Military Cemetery, France in 2010.
