He was 26 and the son of William James and Caroline French Wells of 21 Rosedale Rd., Grays, Essex, England.

He enlisted 14th June 1915 at age 22 years and 2 months and was a butcher by trade having served 5 years with Moore's in Grays. He gave his Next of Kin as his mother of 4 Heath Road, Chadwell St Mary, Grays.
He is commemorated at St John the Baptist church at Mucking, Essex on the north side kerb of the grave of his father
Marble kerb with earth middle, fallen cross alongside, star shaped corners to kerb, metal lettering in capitals.
South side: In memory of WILLIAM J WELLS, passed away 1920 age 63
North side: Also ROWLAND his beloved son, died of wounds in France, March 27th 1918 aged 26
East end: Also of ENA who died Dec 6th 1928 aged 31
