In 1889 Bert Charles Sanders was born in his hometown of Kent England. In his later years he moved over to Australia and settled down in Norwood, South Australia, his precise address being 43 Edward Street Norwood SA. He also married Agnes Ada Saunders. Before he enlisted in the war, Bert was as a commercial traveler and was working in the motor mechanic business, he then in enlisted on the 19th of January 1918.
Before he fully embarked to his directed destination, Bert was to take a Theory, practical and medical test on the 19th of January 1918, which he successfully passed. He then proceeded to work as a Private for the B. Coy, A. Coy and 1st RFFS units from the 11th of February 1918 till the 21st if April 1918. Bert then upgraded to the position of a 2nd class air mechanic serving first the Flying Corps 3rd MD from the 24th of April till the 9th of May 1918. During this time he also served at the SAGH, The Australian Flying Corps Laverton, S.O Inveffen 3rd MD and AIC Laverton. Finally, after nine long months of service at many different units, Bert embarked onto the HMAS boarding in Melbourne on the 5th of October 1918 . He then went on to go to France in 1918 on the 28th of December and soon after went to the UK one-month later on the 6th of January 1919
During Bert’s time serving, he became sick with influenza on the 7th of February 1919. Then Bert sadly fell sick once again, this time with Bronchitis on the 21st of February 1919 which soon after turned Chronic. Bert’s Chronic Bronchitis sickness got worse and developed into Pneumonia where he was then issued at the Wester General Hospital in Liverpool UK, on the 23rd of February 1919.
Bert then was set to return to Australia two months later on the 10th of April 1919. After three months continuing with his duties, Bert was realized of his duties in the 4th MD on the 17th of July 1919.
