Service and family story

Walter Erkine Worland, son of Grazier and Lincoln sheep breeder Edgar Worland and Elizabeth Halsall.
He lived on the family property known as Foxton Park at Creighton near Euroa.

Walter knwn as "Mick" joined the AIF on 27th March 1918 after enlisting on 5th February 1918 he was described as 5ft 5.1/2 inches tall, fair complexion, fair hair and blue eyes. He started in the 2nd Rifle General Service Group and was later transfered to 22nd Battalion AIF. On 3.7.18 he was in the 5th Training Batt. A badge suggests that he was trained in Artillery in Liverpool NSW. On 22nd Nov he travelled via Southampton to France arriving at the Port of Le Havre on 23rd November 1918.  When in France he sent postcards home to family members from towns near the Belgium border and close to Ypres. One from Bailleul sent to his sister Elizabeth, others from Merris, Morbeque and Guines. The War had ended but we presume he was part of the clean up operations.

He returned to Australia on 23rd July 1919 on the ship "Ulysses"

On 13th December 1891 he married Lily Stevens from Pranjip, Victoria, daughter of a successful local Farmer. He returned to Farming, taking over a Halsall property known as "Allendale" and building up a stock of Merino sheep. He was well known in the district for his shooting and fishing skills.  He died at the Creighton farm on 2nd September 1969.
