Let us remember a Fallen Soldier of The Great War whose name has not been inscribed on the Minmi Roll of Honour.
On the 26th September 1917, Private John Petrus Cognet, referred to as Pete, 31st Battalion (Reg No-2124), clipper from Minmi, New South Wales or C/O Harry Ball, Sheddon's Estate, Cessnock, N.S.W., was Killed in Action during the Battle of Polygon Wood, Belgium, age 21 years 5 months.
Born at Minmi, New South Wales on the 1st April 1896 to Louis Jnr, died 16.12.1908, Minmi, N.S.W., age 57, buried at Minmi Cemetery, N.S.W., Left Hand Side, Section 06, Plot 008, and Alice Cognet nee Ryan, died 9.1.1905, Minmi, N.S.W., age 45, mother of 4?, sleeping at Minmi Cemetery, N.S.W., Left Hand Side, Section 06, Plot 008, unmarked grave, no death or funeral notice located - In Memoriam notice from Louis and Alice Cognet, from Minmi, for their son Louis Joseph James Cognet, who died at Pott's Hill on the 29th November 1888. Louis was born on the 27th February 1888 at Liverpool, N.S.W. Sister, Mrs. Marie Ball, born 12?.9?.1891?, Minmi, N.S.W., married Henry (Harry) Ball 1911, Minmi, N.S.W., Marie died tragically 17.5.1924, Cessnock, N.S.W., age 32, sleeping at Cessnock Cemetery, N.S.W., Wesleyan, Section 1, Lot 33, mother of 6, from Sheddon's Estate, or Shedden Street, Cessnock, New South Wales.
Pete enlisted on the 13th September 1915, age 19 years 5 months, at Newcastle, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on board HMAT A70 Ballarat on the 18th February 1916.
Disembarked Suez, Egypt 23.3.1916.
Taken on Strength 31st Battalion 1.4.1916.
Proceeded O/Seas to France from Folkestone, England 11.12.1916.
Admitted to hospital 4.8.1916 (acute appendicitis), 17.3.1917 (trench feet).
Reported Missing in Action 27.9.1917.
Pete’s name has been inscribed on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial (Panel 23), Belgium.

Mr. Cognet’s name has also been inscribed on the Cessnock War Memorial. Name not inscribed on the Minmi Roll of Honour as Fallen.
I am unsure that I can place a Memorial cross adorned with poppies at the unmarked gravesite of parents Louis and Alice Cognet.

Older brother William Pierre, born 26.12.1892, Auckland, New Zealand, 35th & 53rd Battalions, Reg No-739A, single wheeler from Sheddon's Estate, Cessnock, N.S.W., enlisted 29.11.1915, age 23 years 11 months, Newcastle, N.S.W., 35th Battalion, RTA 24.3.1919, to be researched and posted.

Note: I will being adding names to the Minmi Roll of Honour of soldiers that were born at Minmi, working at Minmi before enlistment, parents that are buried at Minmi Cemetery who lost a son or sons during The Great War, and a Fallen soldier whose Place of Association is Minmi.
