A boy from Parramatta

Patrick Joseph Stettler was the son of John Stettler and Isabella Agnes Fisher. He was born in April 1899 at Parramatta, NSW, and lived there all of his life.

The Stettler family were well known to Parramatta Police, as the boys in the family, including Patrick, were real tear-aways. Patrick and his brother John joined up and were in the same battalion. After John was injured in France Patrick was sent back to Australia in 1917. His records state he was returned under section A14 - underage. In 1916 he had told the recruiter he was 18 years and 1 month old. Actually he was 16.

Patrick married Emma Catherine Elphic in 1941, but they do not appear to have had any children, and by 1948 he had divorced on the grounds of desertion.

None of the family appear to have had much education, and after the war Patrick wrote down a story John appears to have dictated to him about his time in France. The original of this is held at the NSW Mitchel Library, and is online on TROVE.nla.gov.au.

Patrick Joseph Stettler died on Anzac day in April 1955, and is buried at Rookwood Catholic Cemetery, Rookwood, NSW, AUS.
