Edwin joined the 50th Battalion and left Adelaide on the Port Melbourne on 23 October 1916. He proceeded to France with his unit on 10 April 1917. Edwin’s War Service Record states that he suffered a shrapnel wound in an arm on 10 June. However, this was later altered and it was reported he was wounded in front line action in France and was taken prisoner of war at Noreuil.
Edwin was repatriated to England on 29 November 1918 and returned to Australia on the Nervasa on 25 April 1919 and was discharged on 3 June.
