From Cumberland, England
William Howlett was born in Carlisle, Cumberland, England in 1886. His father was Henry Arthur Howlett (ex 55th Foot Regt & 4th Batt. Border Regiment) and his mother was Elizabeth R. Huddart. Henry served in Britain, India (Bhutan, Lucknow) and East Indies. William emigrated to Australia June 1911 via assisted passage. He married a Flora Cameron in 1912 and had a son Henry born 1913.
William joined A Coy 35th Battalion AIF in November 1915. He was killed in action 20/7/1917.
