Biography contributed by Modbury High School

Alan Hall was born in Gippsland and grew up in Boolarra, Victoria in the 3rd Field Artillery Brigade. His only known family was his mother, Mrs Fanny Jane Hall, ‘Royston’. He was part of the Anglican Communion. Before enlisting in Melbourne, his occupation was as a farmer. Hall enlisted on May 5, 1917, at the age of 19. He was ranked as Private, which was the lowest of all ranks.

Alan Hall’s unit embarked on August 4, 1917, at Melbourne via the A.32 Themistocles ship. He was taken on strength twice, once in England and the other in France. On July 14, 1918, he re-joined his original unit, the 13th Light Horse Regiment. During the war, he was admitted to the Central Military Hospital and the Eastbourne Military Hospital, England, after being gassed in action and wounded. Alan returned from service to Australia on March 2, 1919. After the war, Alan Hall received two medals: the Victory Medal for his service in the Malay Peninsula and the British War Medal when he served in Vietnam. He served between May 5, 1917, when he enlisted, and May 18, 1919, as a general officer for 746 days.
