7 May 1917:	Wounded Private, 6279, Merris (France), Mel was young at enlistment and entered the war late because of it. They made him a Battalion Runner for when communications were down between the front and HQ. He sustained injury from shrapnel to his ankle. He was still on crutches at the time when the war ended.

Mel lived with his wife Olive in a spacious house on the Granville/Rosehill boundary in Sydney. He was a draper before anyone had heard about the fabric shop "Spotlight". Olive was a teacher at a prestigious girls school during the war. They had 4 children one of whom was my father.
