Private Hugh Collett (Service No:716) enlisted in the AIF on 14 January 1916, having served nine years with the Militia (1st Infantry Battalion) and was attached to 44th Infantry Battalion on 6 June 1916 when he embarked from Fremantle for Plymouth on board HMAT A29 Suevic. Private Collett served in France and embarked for the RTA on 1 June 1919 on board HT Somalia. Private Collett was attached to 44th Infantry Battalion at Discharge on 28 August 1919. In WWII, Private Collett (Service No:W243151) served in the ACMF with 10th and 29th Garrison Battalions (WA) from 11 October 1939 to 26 October 1942.

Hugh was born in Guernsey on the Channel Islands in 1882, sixth of seven children of Francis (Frank) Alexander Edwards Collett (b1844 in London, ENgland) and Laura Augusta Wedlake (b1845 in London, England). Frank (a Banker's Clerk) and Laura married in 1870 in West Ham, Essex and moved to St Peter's Port, Guernsey in the mid 1970s where Frank was an Auctioneer. Frank and Laura immigrated in 1884, arriving in Western Australia on board the Glengoil and settling in Perth where Frank was a Coffee House Keeper until his death in 1891.

Hugh worked in Perth as a Clerk and Librarian and in 1903 in Perth married Esther Mary Veronica Hall Jackson (b1881 in Perth, WA). Hugh and Esther settled in Perth where they raised their family and Hugh worked as a Library Assistant, Librarian and Labourer. Hugh died in 1958 and Esther in 1965.
