Frank SANTLER was born in Taunton, Somerset, England in 1893, to parents Frank and Ellen (née BANKS) SANTLER.
A single, 23 year old accountant living in North Sydney at the time, Frank enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force at Liverpool, New South Wales on 21st June 1915. He was enlisted as a Private with the regimental number 2687, and was allocated to the 8th reinforcements of the 1st Infantry Battalion. After completing his recruit training at Liverpool, Frank embarked with his Unit on 9th August 1915 in Sydney aboard HMAT "Runic", for active service overseas.
Frank arrived to join up with the 1st Infantry Battalion at Gallipoli on 4th November, 1915. Following the evacuation, he proceeded to Alexandria on 28th December. After 3 months of training at Mena Camp, Egypt, he embarked on 22nd March 1916, to join the British Expeditionary Force in France, arriving in Marseilles 6 days later.
On 23rd July 1916, Frank sustained a gunshot wound to his right thigh in Pozieres, France. He was evacuated, and admitted to the 1st Canadian General Hospital on 25th July 1916. A Medical Board in Weymouth, England on 17th November 1916 subsequently found Frank to be permanently disabled, noting that he had severe damage to the muscles in his right leg, and a skin graft to his thigh hadn't yet healed, leaving him able to limp only. On 13th February 1917, Frank embarked at Plymouth, England aboard HMAT "Benalla", for return to Australia, arriving in Melbourne on 13th April. He was discharged medically unfit, permanently incapacitated, in 2nd Military District Sydney, on 14th May 1917.
Frank married socialite Leila Tasma STRANGMAN-BEALE in Brisbane, Queensland, on 16th August 1935. They settled in Ascot, and were heavily involved in the horse racing and social scene. Frank died in Brisbane on 3rd April 1960, aged 67.
