Harold George Hutchins

Harold George Hutchins was the son of Charles John Hutchins and Alice May Hutchins. Harold’s service number was 5131. He was born in May 1898 and was 19 and 9 months when he enlisted in the First Australian Imperial Force (AIF). Harold stood at 5 foot 21/2 inches (1.6 meters) and weighed 115 pounds (52kg). Before the war his occupation was a labourer, he wasn’t married, he was Baptist and lived in Thebarton, Adelaide. He enlisted in the army on the 12th of February 1917.

Harold enlisted on the 12th of February 1917 and the he spent just over ten months training and preparing for war. He was embarked for active service abroad the 22nd of December 1917. Harold George Hutchins was assigned to the 32nd battalion. He travelled to the front in France via Egypt, Italy and England and finally reached the 32nd battalion on 10 May 1918.

Harold was then transferred to the 50th battalion on 22 May, where he spent the rest of his time in the army with. He was recorded absent on the different occasions on the 28th and 29th of July. Which he was then reported missing on the 3rd of August 1918. Then Harold George Hutchins was arrested on the 24th of August 1918. Harold was found guilty and charged to 5 years prison for desertion from 7 p.m. 3/8/1918 to 9 a.m. 16/8/1918. Harold’s sentence was suspended on the 18/6/1919 and was released from prison. He was embarked for return to Australia via the ‘Chemnitz’. Harold failed to return to the ship after expiry of shore leave. Harold then committed another crime which lead to him being openly arrested for Neglecting to obey Troopship Orders in that he was not on board the ‘Chemnitz’ when she set sail for Australia. Harold was also reported to the A.I.F office (First Australian Imperial Force). He was then sailed to Australia per H.T. ‘Valencia’ on the 19/8/1919. The termination of Harold George Hutchins enlistment was on the 5th of October 1919.
