Francis' parents were Mr C.A. Degenhardt and Mrs Margaret Russell Degenhardt who were resident in Port Pirie.
Upon enlistment he was allocated to the 5th Reinforcements, 27th Battalion.
He embarked on 14 September 1915 aboard the HMAT Thermistocles
He joined the Batttalion on the 12th January 1916 in Egypt.
Wounded 4th July 1916 (Armentiers sector). Hospitalised in the UK (1 Australian Auxillary Hospital Harefield) 19 July 1916 with what was variously described as a gunshot wound or septic infection. It could well have been both.
He was charged for overstaying a period of leave in early October and was subject to minor disciplinary action and peanlised with stoppage of pay.
Promoted acting Corporal in November 1916 at the Base depot Etaples, confirmed at Temporary Corporal vice 858 CPL F.C. Lindner in December after rejoining the Battalion.
He was promoted acting Sergeant on 6th January 1917 vice 866 SGT Mills and made Company Quarter Master ('Staff') Sergeant vice Kepworth on 11 Feb 1917.
In September 1917 he was assigned to officer training at No 4 Officer Training Battalion Oxford UK and commissioned on 31 January 1918.
He was then assigned to the 5th Infantry Training Battalion (UK) where he remained until 25th June 1918 when he rejoined the 27th Battalion.
The great Allied Offensive commenced on the 8th August. Francis was wounded in action the next day by shellfire. He is recorded as having sustained a shell splinter wound to the abdomen. He was evacuated to the 61st Casualty Clearing Station where he died of his wounds on the 11th August at 1.15am..
He is buried in Vignacourt Cemetery, along with many other Australian casualties of the first few of the "Hundred Days".
