Herbert Christopher was born and raised in Mount Pleasant, South Australia. Before enlisting in the military, he was working as a Blacksmith’s Assistant, and he identified as following the Church of England. His mother was called Bertha Caroline Wegener and his father was Andrew Henry Edward Wegener. He also had a brother named Hugo John Wegener, who also served in World War 1. He was 18 years old when he embarked on the RMS Mongolia. He enlisted for the military on the 11th of November 1915. He returned to Australia on the 31st of January 1918 and was discharged 27th April 1918.
