Godfrey George Richard TRENOUTH was born on 11th August, 1895 in Roma, Queensland
His parents were George TRENOUTH and Eva Lillian SMITH
He had previous service for three & a half years with the 10th Battalion Field Artillery before he enlisted for the first time on 16th August, 1914 with the Naval & Military Expeditionary Force - he served in Rabaul - discharge date not known
His 2nd enlistment was with the 17th Battalion, B Company on 13th February, 1915 - he suffered a bullet wound & was invalided back to Australia on 4th December, 1915 & disembarked on 2nd January, 1916 and discharged on 18th August, 1916
His 3rd enlistment was with the 54th Infantry Battalion (10th reinforcements) on 4th August, 1917 - he was promoted to Corporal for the voyage only & reverted to Private
Godfrey died on 19th April, 1918 from gas shell poisoning at the 41st Casualty Clearing Station - he is buried in Namps Au Val British Cemetery
Inscription reads:
"BELOVED SON OF GEORGE AND EVA LILLIAN TRENOUTH, SYDNEY"
His name is memorialized on the Australian War Memorial & he was awarded the 1914-15 Star, British War Medal & the Victory Medal
All his effects were lost at sea when being returned to Australia when the ship Barunga was sunk due to enemy action on 15th July, 1918
