Biography contributed by Evan Evans

From Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery

Served during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.

35 years ago today, on the 16th December 1987, Private William Joseph Langworthy, 34th Battalion (Vet Hospital, Reg No-54309), driver from Prospect Road, Canley Vale, New South Wales, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 88. CATHOLIC 1-H Com. 108.

Born at Canley Vale, New South Wales on the 10th July 1899 to Charles Henry and Ellen Langworthy nee Geary; husband of Amy Emmaline Langworthy nee Hennessy (married 1923, Kurri Kurri, N.S.W., died 1985, sleeping here), William enlisted March 1918 with the 6th General Service Reinforcements, N.S.W. at Sydney, N.S.W.

William returned home August 1919, being discharged on the 11th September 1919.

Nothing located on Trove regarding enlistment, returning home, etc.

William was not entitled to the Victory Medal as he did not enter a theatre of war (an area of active fighting).
Mr. Langworthy’s name has been inscribed on the Canley Vale Public School WW1 Roll of Honour.

I have placed poppies and a 1914-1918 WAR label at William’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.

Service record states DECEASED 15/12/1987.
