From Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery

100 years ago today, on the 15th June 1918, Private Alfred Egan, 34th Battalion, tailor from 16 Dumaresque Street, Cooks Hill (Hamilton East), New South Wales, was killed in action at Villers Bretonneux, Northern France, age 27.

Born at Merewether, New South Wales on the 6th January 1891 to Michael (died 1902) and Mary Ann (died 1929) Egan; husband of Louisa M Egan nee Richards (married 1911, died?), Alfred, father to Leslie, enlisted March 1916 at Newcastle, N.S.W.
Alfred is resting at Adelaide Cemetery, Villers-Bretonneux, France. Plot III Row G Grave 20.
Alfred’s name has been inscribed on the Newcastle Branch (1086) Grand United Order of Oddfellows Roll of Honour (photo), The Junction Soldiers' Memorial, Cooks Hill Superior Public School Roll of Honour and the Newcastle South Public School Roll of Honour.

Alfred’s name has not been memorialised on his parent’s headstone, so I have placed a memorial cross adorned with poppies on the gravesite, taken a photo of the memorialised grave and uploaded the photo onto the Northern Cemetery website as a permanent record of his service. CATHOLIC 1-K Com. 13.

Older brother John Joseph (Reg No-2149) buried same location.

Older brother James (Reg No-5533) buried at the cemetery. CATHOLIC 2-63. 46.

This post is for my dear friend Elaine Sheehan, an Egan descendant and former member of the Newcastle Family History Society, who inspired me to become a member of the society and to honour the fallen of the 1st A.I.F.
