Biography
Birth
Kenneth Burden Goode was born in Adelaide on 22 August 1890. His parents were Edward Francis (Frank) Goode Emily Annie Burden.
Schooling
Kenneth attended St Peters College where he played tennis and inter-collegiate cricket and passed his Junior and Senior Examinations. Kenneth was a Cadet for three years.
University of Adelaide
In 1909 Kenneth commenced studying at Adelaide University. Kenneth also passed subjects at the School of Mines and the Adelaide School of Art . In 1914 Kenneth graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering and a Diploma of Applied Science.
University Sport
Kenneth played cricket for the Adelaide University Cricket Club competing in the B grade in 1911/12 and the A grade in 1912/13. He was also a member of the Adelaide University Rifle Club.
World War I
Kenneth enlisted on 9 November 1914, (SN 886 changed to 432), and served in the 3rd Field Company Engineers. He was described in his enlistment papers as 5 foot 8.5 inches, weighing 9 stone and 7 lbs, with a fair complexion, blue eyes and brown hair. He departed Australia in April 1915 and was taken on strength at Gallipoli on 1 June 1915.
On 28 June 1915 Kenneth was wounded the wound was serious and it damaged his vocal cords. He was discharged in London on 18th March 1916 being “no longer physically fit for war service at home or abroad owing to gun shot wound through neck right shoulder although fit for employment in civil life”.
Kenneth’s remained in London and his health appears to have improved as incredibly he was able to join the Royal Garrison Artillery, Special Reserves where he rose to the rank of Lieutenant. In 1918 he was awarded the Silver Medal for Military Valour.
Post World War I
Kenneth stayed on in the UK after WWI and attended the Old Saints and Princes dinner in London in May 1919. In 1923 Kenneth was engaged to Mary MacArthur of Kelso, Scotland. Kenneth was living in Kent in 1923.
Kenneth Goode and Mary MacArthur married on 23 September 1926 after banns, in St Paul’s United Free Church in Cambuslang, Lanarkshire (near Glasgow, Scotland). Kenneth gives his address as being in Santiago, Chile and his occupation as a mining engineer.
After their marriage the couple lived in Syresham, Northamptonshire then in Northumberland Road, Barnet (1929-1933). The electoral registers in England for 1933, 1935 and 1936 show Kenneth and Mary Goode both being registered at 30 Park Chase Wembley, Middlesex. This was still Mary Goode’s address when she died on the 7th July 1948.
Career
Kenneth worked as a metallurgical engineer in mines across the world.
From shipping records (held by Ancestry) his movements were as follows:
• On 16 November 1923, Kenneth boarded a ship "Arlanza" bound for Buenos Aires and intended to permanently reside in Chile.
• On 9th August 1926, he boarded the SS Essequibo in Valparaiso Chile, bound for the US, where he was listed as being in transit from his last permanent residence in Santiago, Chile. His final destination was London. On 12 September 1926, he arrived in Glasgow aboard the “California” from New York.
• On 14 January 1927, he boarded the “Almanzora” in Southampton, bound for Buenos Aires.
• On 19 December 1929, he boarded the “Avelona Star” in London, bound for Buenos Aires and intended to reside in Bolivia.
• On 12 January 1933, Kenneth arrived in London aboard the “Avelona Star”, having travelled from Buenos Aires via Santos, San Sebastian and Teneriffe from his last permanent residence was in Bolivia.
• On 11 January 1938, Kenneth arrived in Fremantle aboard the Strathnaver. Also aboard were Kenneth’s brother and sister-in-law, Roger Goode (a chartered accountant) and Kathleen Goode. They had all come from Bombay. Kenneth had his last permanent residence at Burma, and it is also his country of intended permanent residence. All three were intending to stay in Johnston Street Cottesloe, Perth, with Kenneth at number 27 and Roger and Kathleen at 52. “Mr. K. B. Goode, a mining engineer of Burma, will leave for England today by the Cathay after a visit to his brother, Mr. C. B. Goode (sic), of Peppermint Grove”. Kenneth was a metallurgical engineer at Mawchi Mines Ltd, Burma .
• Kenneth was back in Australia in 1941 as he and Roger flew from Adelaide to Perth in November.
• In 1954 and 1958, Kenneth was living at Mount Isa as the chief designer for Mount Isa Mines Limited.
• In 1963, Kenneth is living at the Greengate Hotel at Killara in NSW. His occupation is "metallurgist, engineer”. The hotel is on the north shore of Sydney and still stands.
Death
Kenneth died on 29th December 1965 in New South Wales, and had been a resident of Pymble (Upper North Shore of Sydney), NSW.
